In particular, the Support Fund focuses on the prevention of disability and on its complications, as well as research into new aetiological, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
The grants therefore cover genetic or molecular research (laboratory research), and clinical research (research on patients' behaviour, psychological and orthopaedic factors).

Types of research
The research grants fund scientific research into intellectual disability (ID) and/or autism (ID/autism). Preference is given to projects likely to contribute to the prevention of ID/autism..
There are two eligible types of ID/autism projects:
- Projects studying the genetic and/or molecular aspects of ID/autism with the aim of discovering the aetiological and/or pathogenetic factors that can lead to ID/autism.
- Clinical research projects (research on patient behavioural, psychological and orthopaedic factors)
Applicant Profile
The grant applicant must be supported by one or two promoters, active in a Belgian university, with extensive experience in the proposed subject.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree.
The Support Fund gives preference to candidates starting a doctorate degree.
Support for a post-doctoral candidate is granted as an exceptional decision.
Ineligibility Factors
The Support Fund does not fund:
Research-related infrastructure and equipment costs
Writing conclusions or articles on other research projects
The project of a team rather than an individual
A master's thesis project
Operating costs of the sponsoring university
Methodology
Grant applications are evaluated by the Scientific Council of the Support Fund. Beyond evaluating the quality of the application, the Support Fund pays particular attention to collaboration between Belgian universities and to the dissemination of results in Belgium and abroad, in particular through national and international conferences organized for this purpose. The grant applicant undertakes to actively participate in these conferences.
All projects must be submitted by completing all sections of the ‘Research Grant Application’ in French, Dutch or English. The request must be sent by email before April 15 or October 1 to the attention of Prof. Rudy van Coster at the following address: info@fondsmmdelacroix.be
A renewal, which will not exceed a maximum of 4 years in total, is possible. The renewal request requires a detailed interim report as well as the search for alternative financing. This report is expected by the usual deadlines (April 15 and October 1) and will be accompanied by an updated request form.
